Overall Rating:
It looks great, sounds fantastic, and goes like an autobahn bullet. The Audi R8 is almost everything you could want from a supercar, all of it wrapped in a comfortable, dead-sexy package that can easily be driven on a daily basis. Are there downsides? Sure. For one, it’s a two-seater, so passenger space is limited. Is it fuel efficient? Nope. It also doesn’t have the same thrilling, razor’s-edge handling of some of its supercar rivals. What the R8 does well, however, is provide surprising comfort along with its ballistic speed. That may outweigh its flaws for some buyers, and—let’s face it—this is Iron Man’s car. Deep down, don’t we all want to be a superhero with a sweet ride?
What’s New for 2017?
Audi’s halo supercar was overhauled for the 2017 model year and features a more powerful version of the last generation car’s 5.2-liter V-10 engine. Unfortunately, the new model ditches the previous R8’s available manual transmission, leaving only an updated seven-speed dual-clutch automatic to feed the Quattro all-wheel-drive system, which is once again standard. The interior is extensively updated and features Audi’s slick Virtual Cockpit, which does without a traditional infotainment display perched atop the dash by providing all driving and entertainment information on a single 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster.
Trims and Options We’d Choose
The R8 is a car for showing off, and although the coupe model is still mighty eye-catching, the convertible Spyder really kicks up the look-at-me quotient a notch. The softtop body style adds $12,200 to the R8 coupe’s entry price of $165,450, but we think it’s worth it to have the option of top-down motoring in this three-season supercar. The Spyder can’t be spec’d with the 610-hp version of the 5.2-liter V-10 (not yet, anyway), but we reckon most buyers will still find the 540-hp punch more than adequate. All R8 Spyders come comprehensively equipped and include luxuries such as:
• Automatic climate control
• Nappa leather seats with heat and power adjustments
• A 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital display with navigation
• A 13-speaker Bang and Olufsen premium audio
We’d go light on the few options that Audi does offer, but the optional 20-inch wheels with summer performance tires for $1500 seem like a worthy upgrade for both looks and performance. As equipped, our R8 Spyder is ready to burn rubber at $179,150. As a bonus, we’d suggest looking into Audi’s European delivery program; picking up your new R8 and touring Europe with it would be one fine way to celebrate dream-car ownership.
